BOECHERER AND KUOTA WINNERS IN MEXICO - COZUMEL 70.3
COZUMEL (MEX): Andi Boecherer and Kuotacycle are the winners of the 70.3 Ironman that was held in Cuzomel, Mexico.
THE RACE: Andi Boecherer (DEU) was first to emerge from the fish-bowl like waters of Chankanaab Park in a time of 22:07. Andrew Starykowicz (USA), James Hadley (GBR), and Vinicio Ibarra (MEX) followed the leader up the steps and onto the dock seconds later.
Once on the bike, Boecherer put his head down and soloed away from the field. After the first half of the bike, two distinct chase packs formed with Drew Scott (USA), Hadley, Leon Griffin (AUS) and Viktor Zyemtsev (UKR) in one group over two minutes off the pace, while Cody Beals (CAN), Taylor Reid (CAN) Raul Tejada (GUA) and Cedric Boily (CAN) formed the second group that was three minutes back. Starykowicz flatted early on the bike and called it a day.
Nearing the end of the bike, the two chase packs merged into one, however their coalition was for not, as Boecherer managed to put the entire chase pack four and half minutes down as the he stormed in and out of transition.
Once on the run, Boecherer appeared to show the effects of his lone venture off the front during the bike. Beals and Zyemtsev chewed into the German’s lead and had his advantage to 1:42 and 2:13 with half the run yet to be completed. Boecherer showed true grit in the closing km’s of the run holding off two extremely talented runners in Beals and Zyemtsev to claim the win in a time of 3:48:19. Beals came up short by 23 seconds while Zyentsev faded late in the run but managed to hold onto third place.
ANDY: "Super happy to take the win at Ironman 70.3 Cozumel today. The run was more mental than physical but luckily I found my run legs back 2km away from home".
